What is OptionsPilates?

OptionsPilates is the first and only international chain of Pilates and Movement studios worldwide. We are based in Singapore and quickly growing through out Asia with branches in Singapore, Hong Kong and Satellite Training Centres for Pilates Academy in Seoul. This growth has been achieved due to the strong reputation of the founder, Joseph Halstead, enabling us to attract and train the best instructors and partners.

How is OptionsPilates different?

 

We strive to differentiate ourselves from other studios with constant innovation that keeps our instructors up to date and maintains their superior quality and knowledge. We train our instructors on-site and also at our regionally-renowned Singapore education centre which is licensed to teach a variety of methods as well as our own courses. Because of this we can assure consistently high standards that cannot be achieved elsewhere.

Our Team

Sharon – Sharon is a former contemporary dancer/choreographer who is currently  a Master Trainer for Core Barre, a Core Suspend Instructor Trainer, a Pilates Academy International (PAI) Master Instructor Trainer, certified in Gyrotonics® and former Instructor Trainer in Stott Pilates. While dancing professionally, she decided to further her qualifications by taking the teacher’s course for Stott Pilates® in Canada, for which she was certified in 2005. In 2007, she retired from dancing and moved to Hong Kong to work full­‐time as a senior Pilates instructor. She joined OptionsPilates in 2009 in which she continued her education by taking the Instructor training course in Canada and Spain.

Creating positive results is her aim, striving to help clients feel better and stronger after a session, always helping to promote a healthy, positive lifestyle. Most recently in September 2013, Sharon presented the Core Barre on a Wedge Workshop at the AsiaFit Convention in Bangkok, Thailand and at the IFEX, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Roderick Mendoza – Erick is a Physical Education graduate from the College of Human Kinetics, University of the Philippines majoring in sports. As a varsity player he had trained, competed and won a few medals in the sport of Judo.

His fitness experience ranges from aerobics and gym training from the 1990s where he started as a trainer and later on managed a club at Fitness First Philippines. He soon became a Master Trainer, training new instructors who wanted to become personal trainers and later on managed the fitness department as a National Fitness Manager overlooking 13 clubs. He has worked in Saudi Arabia and Dubai before Singapore where he started Pilates 3 yrs ago at OptionsPilates Singapore.

Angie – Angie enjoys working with people from all walks of life and helping them achieve grace, strength and confidence through Pilates and dance. She serves a wide range of clientele – pregnant mums, teenagers, housewives, seniors and working professionals. She has also worked with many clients who have special conditions (e.g. back, foot and shoulder injuries), assisting them in long-term post-rehabilitation. Her vision is to help others restore freedom in their movements through Pilates.

In her free time, Angie enjoys hanging out at cafés, drumming for her worship team in her church, traveling and gaining new experiences. She feels most alive when she is surrounded by nature and when she is dancing up a storm.

Jackie Pau – With a passion for Pilates since she first tried it in 2000, Jackie has pursued certification in different methods of Pilates to widen her repertoire and depth of knowledge so that she can help clients achieve their goals better.

Apart from Pilates, she also looks at combining different modalities such as Core Balance, TRX, Core Barre, Body Rolling and reflexology when she teaches in order that clients receive a holistic approach to exercise and walk out of a class feeling better. Her curiosity in understanding how the body works leads her to take up different courses to constantly improve her skills. Jackie is also a freelance writer.

Annie – I started teaching Pilates (free style program) year 2002. Then Ole Eugenio (our Master Trainer) , we were also working together at Fitness First Philippines, introduced me to Stott Pilates method.  I was really interested then in expanding my knowledge in Pilates and I feel that I need a good ‘tool’ to become a teacher. And so year 2004 I started my training and year 2005 became a certified Stott Pilates teacher Level 1 and got fully certified year 2010(level 1 and 2).

My interests in running, cycling and other outdoor activities helped me in my Pilates practice.
I love working with Special Population and Condition because it gives me more fulfillment especially when I see them get better.

Koko – Koko moved in Singapore as a housewife. She was first introduced to Pilates as a client, and after a short period of time, she saw the physical and mental benefits of Pilates was unbelievable. Koko decided to get her teaching certification so that she could help others discover the many perks of a consistent Plates practice.

As a practitioner and trainer, Koko is continuously inspired by how Pilates re-educates and heals the body. She enjoys working with people of all fitness levels, as well as teaching Pilates for pre and posts natal.

King Patrick Marcelo – Patrick is a licensed nurse by profession. Having the experience of working in a hospital and clinic set-up, he is adept at caring for different types of patients from newborns to geriatrics, men to women. His desire to help others grow in wellness, combined with his love for exercise, prompted him to start his fitness career soon after.

He began as a licensed lifeguard in a fitness center back in the Philippines where he was eventually introduced to the world of Pilates by one of the instructors. Initially he was hesitant, believing that Pilates was only for girls. He realized that the benefits of Pilates are for everyone, even for guys!

In 2011, Patrick completed his official training in Pilates in Singapore. He then went on to teach in OptionsPilates (Manila) and was often invited to be the guest instructor at Absolute Pilates, Bangkok. Currently with 3 years of teaching experience, he is still constantly seeking to expand and develop his teaching skills and knowledge.

Katherin Saoud – I have been a sport enthusiast since I started walking. 11 years back, I signed up for a Pilates training session and I became addicted (in my husband’s words) to the sport almost instantaneously.

After several years of practicing I decided to take my passion with Pilates a step higher. In 2009 I enrolled myself in Stott Pilates academy in Sao Paulo, which seems only like yesterday. Eugena – Eugena is a dance graduate from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), and has performed for several major events such as, Esplanade’s Da:ns Festival and NAFA’s annual diploma showcase – Crossings. Prior to beginning her career as a Pilates instructor, Eugena was also dancing for a local contemporary dance company, Re:Dance Theatre. Eugena has been practicing Pilates since the age of 16, and is a certified PAI Mat, Reformer, and Smart Movement (Core barre, Core reformer) instructor.

Flora – I  am primarily a secondary school choir instructor first then a pilates instructor.

 

I have been teaching school choirs since 1996 and been participating in regular national and international choir competitions and events with these choirs But I have always fallen  sick frequently due to a stressful work practice . When I started taking up body mind soul classes like stretching , pilates and yoga since 2009 , I felt myself becoming healthier and more able to cope with work related stress,   my lifestyle became more balanced.

I began to find pilates very interesting and challenging as there are so many modifications and possibilities available for different clientele . There is so much to learn from the various types of pilates exercises, not just matwork.

 

I also find the principles of pilates that i had learnt also applicable to help my choir students sing better.

 

As such I became more interested in pilates , and decided to study it as an instructor course more for my own knowledge gain. But with the certification , opportunities to teach and cover pilates classes also became available . Such opportunities exposed me  to different types of clients and their needs , and help better my knowledge of pilates and make me want to learn more.

Jenny – Jenny started doing Pilates 10 years ago, but it was pregnancy that led her on her journey of becoming a Pilates Instructor. She has been trained by Options Studio, Singapore. She is certified under New York based Pilates Academy International (PAI) in Mat, Reformer, Chair, Cadillac and barrel and Post Rehab. She also just earned her certification in Pre & Postnatal Pilates and Pilates for Menopause by the Center for Women’s Fitness.

 

She is very enthusiastic, positive and has a good rapport with her clients. With her background she is always ready to help all her clients on their fitness journey, whether through rehab, functional pilates, or just all around feel good workout.

Melissa – Coming from a corporate/ management background made Melissa realise how  health and good awareness of the body is vital to cope with daily life.   Hence, she found Pilates an exercise regime that will support her total body performance.

 

From swimming to taekwondo to running to badminton and ultimate frisbee, Melissa has always enjoyed being active in sports since young. To support her physique, she went to the gym to strengthen and build muscle as well as endurance training however it didn’t seem to be enough to fully condition body to perform competitively.  Intense sports weakened and strained her knees and went for rehabilitation to recover. Melissa then tried to find another avenue to workout safely  to better support her daily lifestyle and fitness- and found Pilates. It did not only help her strengthen and tone her core but now a deeper understanding of her body – a stronger sense of awareness to perform and move optimally.

 

Melissa has completed her training and certification at Options Pilates Singapore to share her joy in helping fellow athletes, sports lovers and anyone who simply wants to progress with their physical activities with strength and grace.

Katrina Santos-Mercado – From her humble beginnings in the Philippines, Katrina has grown to be one of the most respectable artists in the field of dance. She has been singled out by critics for her innate musicality, unforced line, delicate neck and beautiful face, and she has continued to charm the Philippine dance scene since she became member of Dance Theater Philippines, Philippine Ballet Theater and Ballet Philippines.

From being a professional ballet dancer, she has also been teaching dance in reputable dance schools in Manila implementing the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet Syllabus. A graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree major in Dance, she has been department chair and lecturer of the DLS-CSB School of Design and Arts- Bachelor of Performing Arts in dance.

Her passion in teaching has found its way to Pilates. As a former ballet dancer, it was interesting for her to find the connection and application of Pilates to dance. Having understood Pilates in a deeper sense, she became more amazed with how pilates can make a client move with ease and grace after making it part of their regimen.

Katrina is a Fully Certified Stott Pilates instructor.  Furthering her studies with Stott, she attended the Merrithew Mindful Movement World Tour 2013, in Osaka Japan wherein she participated in the Total Barre Instructor Foundation course and the Zenga Mat Instructor Foundation Course which certifies her as Instructor for these brands. In 2014, Katrina attended a seminar on The Optimization of the Lumbo-Pelvic Region: Part A and B, and also took the Advance Mat workshop. The year after, she completed the course, Injuries and Special Populations Trained  Instructor course.

She is now a certified PAI (Pilates Academy International) instructor for Options Studio, Singapore.

What can you expect from your workouts?

 

With Pilates classes you can expect to feel a difference in your body in just a few sessions, whether it’s for lower back pain, postural improvement or a general improvement in energy levels. After 10-20 sessions you should see a noticeable change in your physical appearance and feel stronger in your daily activities.

Core Suspend™ and Neurac™ have an almost instant effect. Assuming that you work hard during class your muscles will feel lighter and looser. Your back, shoulders and hips will feel uncompressed and muscle tightness will begin to be alleviated.

Who are our clients?

 

Our clients range from pregnant ladies to youths to geriatric rehab patients to the fittest of competitive athletes along with those who just want to stay in shape. There are very few restrictions as to who can workout with us and everyone is welcome. Sessions can be discrete and private if required or group classes can involve interaction and socialising between clients.

Where are we located?

 

We now have 4 locations in Singapore – just along Orchard Road at International Building (beside Thai Embassy and Isetan Mall), in American Club (members only), Oxley Rise (Private 1-on-1 sessions), and Bukit Timah Sime Darby Building.

Is there parking?

 

At International Building, there is plenty  of parking space in open parking opposite Liat Towers and in carpark at Shaw Center.

At Oxley Rise is FREE parking for 1-hour.

At the Sime Darby Centre there is shared parking.  The parking charge is $1.20 per hour.

Other transport

International Building is close to Orchard MRT Stations, and most Orchard Boulevard buses 171, 700, 162, 167 stop at Scotts Royal Plaza.

Oxley Rise branch is near Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station.

Bukit Timah Branch is serviced by plenty of buses and with a new MRT Downtown Line King Albert Station.
